France Antelme was born a British subject on 12 March 1900 in Curepipe, in the British crown colony of Mauritius. He was the fourth of eight children of (Louis) Gaston Antelme and (Marie) Mauricia Antelme (née Rathier du Vergé). His father came from an influential Franco-Mauritian family and was a successful planter and producer of sugar cane. He was also a long-serving politician, from 1906 to 1926, representing firstly the district of Rivière Noire and later that of Plaines Wilhems. Well-respected by successive Governors of the island, he acted as an intermediary between the colonial government of Mauritius, British companies and the island’s agricultural community. France was educated at the Royal College in Curepipe and was a keen sportsman, including fishing, riding and tennis among his pastimes.
