Julien Detal was born during the First World War on 2 May1915 at Maisons-Laffitte (78), near Paris, the son of Belgian parents, Joseph Julien and Alice Georgine Detal of Brussels, who were refugees from German-occupied Belgium..  His father died some years later and his mother remarried. The family had returned to Brussels after the war and and Detal is known to have lived in the capital’s Ixelles (Elsene) municipality at 128 rue Louis Hap.

Little is known of Detal’s early life and education in Belgium as he has no surviving SOE personal file in the UK  National Archives It is, however, known that he served as a junior officer in the Belgian Army from 1937 to 1940 and survived the May 1940 campaign to work for Belgian Intelligence in France for 10 months until he escaped to England in the spring of 1941....[Remainder of case study is complete - contact author for further details].
