James Amps was born  21 April 1908, at Rueil (Malmaison), France, son of a British father, Joseph William Amps and a Flemish mother, Rose Amps, née  Vynk. Although taking his father’s British nationality, Amps was raised in France, he went to school in Neuilly, but only until the age of 13 when he commenced an apprenticeship with a racehorse trainer.
