Lieutenant James Andrew ("Andy") John MAYER


‘Andy’ Mayer was born in Tananarive, Madagascar on 19 April 1920, the youngest of the three sons of Edwin Edward Mayer and his wife Berthe (née Brown).  Though Madagascar was then a French colony and Edwin Mayer had a French background, the family had moved to the island in order to pursue the interests of the family business, Edwin Mayer & Co.  They had gone there from Mauritius shortly before Andy Mayer was born and retained their British nationality which came from Mauritius being a British possession.  Though they spoke fair English, the boys’ mother tongue was French and Andy, the only one of the three brothers to be born and educated entirely in Madagascar, was raised against a background of French colonial life..............[Remainder of case study is complete - contact author for further details].
